John
John Akuusu is an experienced mission leader and the newly appointed Africa Team Leader for Freedom Ascent, as well as a Training Partner of Storyweavers Global in Africa. John brings to this role a deep, personal commitment to discipleship and addiction recovery in African contexts. His journey began in a Catholic family in rural Benue State, Nigeria, and was transformed as a teenager when a gospel message from Deeper Life Bible Church led him to faith in Christ, despite significant struggles with family acceptance and years of hardship.
As a university student, John's passion for missions and evangelism grew, leading him on short trips within Nigeria and eventually to a years-long ministry in Gambia with his wife, where he discipled young men in partnership with Mission House International and WEC. Since 2019, he has served as National Coordinator for Simply Mobilizing Nigeria, mobilizing churches and individuals for cross-cultural missions through thousands of trainings across the country.
John's engagement with Freedom Ascent began online but deepened through in-person training during a Freedom Ascent training trip to Tanzania and Malawi. He found the approach uniquely biblical in addressing both the spiritual and physical roots of addiction—contrasting with secular models that often replace one dependency with another. John is passionate about seeing churches respond more effectively to addiction, equip small group leaders, and deepening discipleship processes across Nigeria. He envisions the spread of Freedom Ascent groups in local churches to create safe spaces for recovery and holistic transformation, striving for a future where faith communities can meaningfully support those affected by addiction.
Known for his patient, long-term commitment to those in recovery, John continues to call and gather pastors and leaders to build teams dedicated to Freedom Ascent ministry. His ongoing prayer is for God to raise up committed leaders, foster deeper church engagement, and bring lasting change to individuals, families, and communities throughout Africa.
As a full-time missionary, John and his family depend on the generous donations of God’s people for their living and ministry expenses.
